Day 41&42 Rest and Ruins

Day 41-  Not much to say here!  We did school work (we always do at least 2 hours a day)  we caught up on laundry, we walked into Sorrento and had lunch.  we did walk down to the water front in Sorrento.  We saw ferries, fishermen, and ferral cats.  Reid was obsessed with fishing, but it was too late in the season to rent gear.  A lot of the restaurants and shops were closed for the season, but there were ferries still running.  We had a nice lunch in town and then headed home for an evening of cards, dinner, and an early bedtime.   Day 42- Off to Pompeii I hesitated combining Pompeii with any other post, because there is a lot to talk about on this one.  Ever since I was a little girl, I have been obsessed with Pompeii!  I have read books, read articles,...

Day 40 Time to Live My Under the Tuscan Sun Fantasy

Day 40- Yep!  I sure did just reference a several years old movie…and it won’t be the last time either!  We wanted to travel all down the Amalfi coast…but thanks to the rain the night before…the road was closed past Positano.  Well , decision made, Positano it was! So, we have been using our Rick Steves’ guides, and they are fantastic.  Literally Europe for dummies who want to travel smart.  But here is something that I have actually seen a few times on this trip, that I think would make Rick Steves’ cringe.  People holding his guide books while being rude, obnoxious, Americans! I mean honestly, don’t get me started…but we had a few interactions with a couple of different sets of people, clutching their guidebooks...

Day 39 Sorrento in the Rain

Day 39- We spent a cool but comfortable night in our new apartment in Sorrento (actually Saint Agnello about 2 km away from Sorrento).  I have to admit that we took our time getting up in the morning.  We had been driving quite a bit, and let’s face it driving in Italy can take it out of you!  Today we decided that we would walk into Sorrento and look into the thing we were thinking about doing: Pompeii, going down the Amalfi coast, and going to Naples.  We wanted to find the Circumvesuviana train station and just get a general feel for where we were.  We had listened to a Rick Steves pod cast, and he was touting Sorrento as the place to base yourself to see all of the sites I have just mentioned.  He said that even though Sorrento did not have any major...

Day 38 Pescara to Sorrento Strap on Your Seat Belt

Day 38 was a day spent driving to Sorrento.  We went through some beautiful countryside and hills.  It was really neat to see different old towns perched on hillsides.  As we got closer to Sorrento, we passed by Mt. Vesuvius and Pompeii (no you could not see the ruins from the highway) and then we hit the coast.  Okay the beauty here is undeniable, but the roads are insane!  Hairpin turns overlooking high rocky cliffs that drop off into the ocean.  Russ and Reid got to ooh and ahh, and I gripped the wheel and focused on not driving off the cliff.  Add in a giant tour bus here, some insane Vespa drivers there..and viola you have a car trip in Italy…well almost.  Okay Italy I as a driver in your country I have a few questions: *Why is it okay to straddle a...

Day 36 Time for Some Venetian Culture

Day 36- Today we got up early, early so we could eat the free breakfast, and early so we could go downstairs to use the internet.  One thing I am not sure if I have mentioned, is that the internet sucks in Italy.  Yes, I said the “s” word, but it is true!  It is unreliable at best, spotty, and overall just a pain.  Now for normal tourists this would not be a problem, but when your husband works online, you are trying to write a blog, your are homeschooling your son, and you use the internet to call your family…it is a HUGE bummer!  So we ate breakfast and got caught up as best we could (yes I was a bit lazy when it came to blogging…reasoning that I didn’t really have enough time to post…and now here I am playing catch...

Day 35 When You Go To Venice You Must Bring Your Boots

Day 35-  We were up and ready to go at the crack of 11:00 this morning…not sure what took us so long getting out the door. Maybe it was our teeny tiny showers or maybe it was too much time spent gawking out our windows…but whatever it was, we were late getting out.  Yes, so late in fact we missed our free breakfast at the hotel!  So off we went, we were headed to St. Marks by foot, and we had no idea what we were in for! As we crossed the Spanish bridge, we decided to stop in a cafe to grab a coffee and some breakfast.  Okay, I have to admit that I like Italian brioche (croissant) better than the French ones!  What? Oh you heard me!  So after breakfast we set out on our walk around Venice!  One of the first things that I noticed as we began to make...
